A Room Full of Potential: Inside Orientation Day One of the Youth Connect IEE Pathways Programme
There was an unmistakable energy in the room as 50 of Lagos’s most promising young minds gathered to embark on a transformational journey. The Linus Idahosa Foundation for Empowerment Africa (LIFE Africa), in partnership with the British Council, officially kicked off Orientation Day One for the Youth Connect Inclusive Economic Empowerment (IEE) Pathways Programme.
Designed to bridge the gap between talent and real-world economic opportunity, this six-month initiative offers young Lagosians a structured launchpad into high-income corporate careers and sustainable entrepreneurial ventures. From the warm morning reception to the immersive first lecture, here is an exclusive look inside how the orientation unfolded and how the participants experienced this landmark day.
Arrival, Warm Welcomes & Tag Collection
The morning began with a vibrant buzz as participants aged 18 to 35 arrived from priority Local Government Areas across Lagos, including Mushin, Surulere, Agege, Alimosho, Kosofe, and Lagos Mainland.
For many, stepping into the venue was accompanied by a mix of eager anticipation and initial nervousness. However, the welcoming atmosphere immediately put everyone at ease. Participants were officially received at the registration desks, checked in, and handed their customized name tags.
Grounded in a firm commitment to diversity, the cohort guarantees at least 50% female representation and no less than 5% inclusion for persons with disabilities (PWDs). Accessibility needs were verified, photography consent forms were logged, and transport stipends were disbursed, ensuring every young person entered a safe, equitable, and dignified environment. Once tagged and settled, the cohort was formally welcomed into the venue and properly introduced to the life-changing journey ahead.
Keynote Remarks & Stakeholder Insights
Starting promptly at 9:00 AM, the opening plenary brought together program leaders, ecosystem partners, and industry stakeholders.
- The Group COO’s Address: Mr. Ben Okonkwo, Group COO of Del-York Group / LIFE Africa, delivered an inspiring speech that set the tone for the program. He urged the cohort to embrace the opportunity with total dedication, discipline, and a growth mindset.
- The LIFE Africa Vision: Mr. Evans Emmanuel, Head of Foundation for LIFE Africa, addressed the participants on the broader mission of LIFE Africa beyond the IEE program. He shared the foundation's Skillustry Model, highlighting how LIFE Africa works across the continent to connect practical skills with real market opportunities, pointing to this cohort as part of a larger ambition to empower one million African youth over the next decade.
- Partner & Stakeholder Voices: Industry leaders and ecosystem partners stepped forward to welcome and encourage the young cohort. Key speakers included Mr. Victor Anagor and Ms. Ayomide Onasanya (Co-founders at Kryptr), alongside Mr. Damilola Obidairo (representing 8th Gear Partners), as well as representatives from the British Council and Lagos State. Each speaker underscored the immense demand in the Nigerian economy for skilled, reliable, and innovative young talent.
Immersive Orientation: Program Essentials & Safeguarding
To ensure total clarity and psychological safety, participants were guided through visual orientations:
- Program Overview Video: The cohort watched a detailed instructional video walking them through everything they needed to know about the Youth Connect IEE Pathways Programme, covering the shared 8-week Foundational Phase through to the branching Employment (14-week) and Enterprise (16-week) tracks.
- Safeguarding Orientation: Participants also watched a dedicated video on Safeguarding. Facilitators outlined clear ground rules, mutual respect protocols, and confidential reporting routes to guarantee a zero-tolerance policy for harassment, discrimination, or abuse of power throughout the program.
The First Lecture: Wellbeing, Resilience & Personal Effectiveness
Following the opening addresses and orientation videos, the cohort transitioned directly into their very first official lecture of the program.
The session was delivered by Dr. GG (Dr. GodsGift Obi), who led an engaging module on Mental Wellbeing, Resilience, Personal Effectiveness & Self-Care. Dr. GG broke down how young professionals and entrepreneurs can recognize stress signals, build emotional resilience, and maintain personal effectiveness under high-pressure environments.
Participants engaged in practical drills, learning the Pause – Reflect – Regain approach to handle workplace conflict, financial strain, and personal challenges. The session also featured group work where participants co-drafted their shared learning contract and built a support map of resources across their home Local Government Areas.
Participant Showcase: Spoken Word & the Power of Voice
The orientation also gave the cohort a chance to take the spotlight. Two participants took the stage to thrill the audience with spoken word performances, and an audience that had begun the day in quiet anticipation answered with warm, wholehearted appreciation.
The showcase captured the rich tapestry of talents within the cohort, and its place in the day was no accident. Alongside its technical and entrepreneurial content, the Youth Connect IEE Pathways Programme deliberately weaves in extra-curricular activities, because the corporate workplace asks for more than technical competence. It rewards people who can express themselves, hold an audience, and bring their whole selves to their work. Standing before peers, microphone in hand, is real practice for the confidence, communication, and self-awareness that pitches, presentations, and interviews demand.
When the performances ended, the cohort rose to its feet in applause, a show of support that spoke to the community taking shape within the cohort. It was a reminder that the programme is shaping more than employable talent: it is nurturing confident, well-rounded young people ready for the demands of the modern workplace.
How the Participants Felt: Inspired, Confident & Ready
By the time the day drew to a close, the early morning quiet and hesitation had completely transformed into shared enthusiasm, energetic conversations, and strong peer connections.
Through the practical exercises and interactive discussions, participants expressed a renewed sense of confidence. Many shared how rare it was to find a learning space where their voices were genuinely heard, their potential was validated, and constructive feedback was offered with empathy and respect.
Orientation Day One was more than just an onboarding session. It was the moment 50 young Lagosians stepped into a supportive community built to help them convert talent into lasting, dignified livelihoods.
Stay tuned as we follow our 50 participants through Phase 1's Foundational weeks and witness their progress as they step into their chosen pathways!
